Instead of resisting it all the time, you adapt to it, you make the best of it, youre able to look back at situations and always find what was great about it, even if it was painful or hard. Going back to my four hours in the day, I would spend two hours reading a book on the subject matter that I had before I even started my four-hour day. I think when you are announcing changes, most recently I felt like there was some change of focus, some change of energy that we needed to have in our organization, and the first thing that I did was go on a fact finding mission. So I always equate change and I know change can be disruptive, Ive had those moments of having that perspective and even experienced disruptive change. I certainly believe that its a muscle that we have to exercise within us a belief that change is going to bring about something positive, and in that positivity is a chance to grow and become better. But I would say in preparing yourself for growth theres an intentional action around putting yourself in uncomfortable situations to build that muscle, callouses, whatever you want to call it, that helps become more adaptable. We often associate growth and progress with working on our relationships, our career, or our finances. I put a couple examples in your notes because I want to make sure you get this. This is the best way. Whats the intentionality behind sharing not only what youre learning, but sharing what youre consuming and how youre doing it with your team? The reason you start with yourself is because you cannot give what you do not have, so you better start with yourself. When the opportunity comes, heres the way. I dont journal every day, but I jot every day, four or five words. I thought, Oh, thats so good. Then you were talking about some of the practices and principles that were using in the first person. The second comment I would make about personal change is this. I dont think weve ever complimented one another as much as we did yesterday in that meeting. I mean, it is such a great time to ask yourself, What is my plan for growth? And if you dont have one, we do. Ill give you three of them just in this session. Were in the middle of a process right now thats driving a little bit me, maybe you too, a little bit crazy because Im ready to act and were still in the information gathering. I mean you can close chapters, you can open new ones, you can have this fresh zest on life and possibilities and know that every day is new. Leadership is about change. I think growth happens in a lot of ways. For me, the best part of the day is the morning. Man, Im excited. Maybe its a teammate because you cant see the forest for the trees for your family at this point. I discovered that in my 20s when I sat down and had breakfast with a guy named Curt Kampmeier at the Holiday Inn in Lancaster, Ohio, when he asked me the question, John, do you have a plan for personal growth in your life? Didnt have a plan. When it comes to life and leadership, one of the wisest pieces of advice comes from John Maxwell: "You have to start with yourself.". I think you and I probably know a lot of people that would assume change is they attach it to fear or maybe they attach it to something exciting or they just attach it to its expected, its going to happen and kind of pack your bags and get ready to go all the time.
